Timeline: All the times A's ownership has tried to move out of Oakland

As a Las Vegan, I began to pay serious attention to the idea of the Athletics relocating to Southern Nevada only after they announced their deal with Bally's to come to the Strip. Before that point, it just seemed too up-in-the-air as an idea, at least to me. (For context, I approached the Raiders' relocation in a similar manner.)

As a result, I've been researching the history of the Athletics for the past few years. In that time, I've reached the conclusion that the franchise should've remained in Kansas City, particularly after the municipality had agreed to build then-owner Charlie Finley a new stadium (e.g. Kauffman Stadium, current home of the Royas). But ol' Charlie seemed to have wanderlust, and he just wanted to get outta Missouri. And the other owners seemed to be tired of fighting with Finley about relocation. So they let him go to NorCal.

However, the Athletics -- even when they were winning -- were never great box office in the Bay Area. They seemed to always play second fiddle to the Giants, who had that Big Brand Name Aura from their New York days that the A's could never match. In addition, the days of having more than one team per sport in one city (outside of N.Y.C. and L.A.) are basically over. (Don't be surprised if the White Sox get relocated over the next 20 years, perhaps to Charlotte or Austin.)

But good luck in trying to explain this reality to the S.I.O. crowd. They'll respond by shouting expletives at you, and accusing you of being on John Fisher's payroll. 🙄
