Refuting the argument that an expansion team would be accepted much more

First, let's discount the challenges in getting an expansion team. The cost would be much more, the likelihood much less, and the timeframe in years, if ever.
Vegas Golden Knights (VGK) are an expansion team. They have also established and maintained a very strong bond with the city. Some might believe the first fact led to the second. They might believe in causation versus correlation.
I believe the support the VGK received in Las Vegas has much more to do with the unique circumstances when they started playing, and how the team responded to those circumstances. I believe had the VGK been a team that moved to Las Vegas from another city under the same circumstances, they would have received the same support.
The VGK's first game was played just days after the 1 October massacre when visitors and locals were killed and injured. Those living in other cities and hearing of violence in their own cities cannot imagine the grief and sadness that enveloped all of Las Vegas. The dependence of Las Vegas on tourists doesn't begin to describe the reaction. Most locals take pride in their city and its ability to welcome guests, ensure they have good times, and most importantly, provide for their safety. Many locals have friends and relatives from other cities who visit, and this tragedy hit home very hard. To this day, the reaction remains strong as evidenced by the ongoing activity to build a permanent memorial to all the victims.
The VGK provided a venue for locals to cheer a team and feel good about something during dark times. The chanting of Vegas Strong demonstrates the needed resiliency. To this day, a Resiliency Support Center exists to help heal the continued wounds, vegasstrongrc.org
The VGK through their initial response and their continual community involvement, established and solidified their bond with the Las Vegas community. I believe if the VGK relocated here under similar circumstances, the bond would have been equally strong. While the term, VEGASBORN, demonstrates pride in the team, given the overall circumstances, it is not a major factor in the team's bond with the community.
