Discussion of Bay Area versus Las Vegas Market Size

There have been discussions comparing Las Vegas size with San Francisco, so let's delve into some numbers. According to the 2022-2023 Nielsen DMA Ranking, San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose DMA is ranked 10 with 2,593,210 TV homes.

Las Vegas is ranked 40 with 870,240 TV homes.

But the SFO etc DMA is a large area with many areas not associated with Oakland. I don't have DMA numbers by county but to approximate, consider the number of households by county in 2018 from a California gov website. Alameda county has 583,042 households. To be generous, let's add Contra Costa county which has 413,923 households. Even more generous, the number of households have to exceed the TV homes, and there was likely a population decline between 2018 and 2023. But anyway, keeping those numbers, both counties total 996,965 households.

Now if we place both counties in the Nielsen DMA Ranking table, they could come in ranked 35. Not a huge difference from Las Vegas.

S.I.O. goofballs: "Oakland is a major league city that deserves its own sportsball teams. We don't wanna have to root for San Francisco's teams as our own! We hate San Francisco!"

Also S.I.O. goofballs: "In order to larp as a major league city, we have to count the population totals from San Francisco and San Jose towards our own numbers! Please don't question our math or methodology on this, you bigots!"
